Why Tanzania Why Serengrti

While both the Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) and the Maasai Mara National Reserve (Kenya) share the iconic Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and host the Great Migration, the Serengeti offers several unique advantages:unique advantages:

Serengeti: At 14,750 km², it is 5x larger than the Maasai Mara (1,510 km²);

Wildlife Density: Supports larger herds year-round, not just during migration;

The Serengeti hosts the Great Migration for 9–10 months annually,the Maasai Mara only sees the migration from July–October, when herds cross the Mara River.

Serengeti Has Lower Tourist Density: The Serengeti’s vastness disperses visitors, reducing congestion at sightings compared to the Maasai Mara’s smaller, more crowded reserves.

Serengeti Has Private Concessions: Offers exclusive, vehicle-free zones for walking safaris and fly-camping (e.g., Serengeti’s Wilderness Areas)

The Serengeti’s resident lion prides, leopards, and cheetahs thrive even outside migration season. The Maasai Mara’s big cat sightings peak only during migration months.

While the Maasai Mara focuses on Maasai cultural interactions, the Serengeti region offers access to other indigenous tribes, such as the Hadzabe (one of Africa’s last hunter-gatherer communities) and the Datoga, for deeper cultural immersion.

Black Rhinos: The Serengeti has a small but stable population of critically endangered black rhinos (protected in the Moru Kopjes area), while rhinos are nearly extinct in the Maasai Mara.

Endemic Species: Home to unique species like the patas monkey and secretary bird, less common in the Mara.
